What is Canada Day and why do we celebrate this day in Canada?
Formerly known as Dominion Day, July 1st is a national holiday for all Canadians to celebrate the anniversary of the Canadian Confederation on July 1, 1867. It is a day to celebrate the uniting of three separate colonies – the United Canadas, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick – into one dominion.
How to herald Canada Day with your little ones?
- Canadian Flag making
- Watch a short kids show about Canadian history.
- Listen to the Canadian anthem
- Cooking Canadian food
Canadian Flag Making
- coloring pens
- scissors
- wooden chopsticks or straws
- tape
Print a Canadian flag from the Balance in Wonderland library. After coloring and some scissor work you can complete the Canadian flag by taping it onto a wooden chopstick or drinking straw. Extend and decorate the straw or chopstick by taping a few together and wrapping them with ribbon or colored tape.
Happy Canada Day!
