Did you know that teaching children about their feelings is an important step in helping them to control their own emotions?
As parents face their children’s negative emotions, it can be hard not to make the mistake of ordering them to calm down. The problem is, young children don’t understand their feelings well enough yet, apart from the flood of overwhelming sensations that can make them explode into fits of screaming and tears.
Whenever your child exhibits strong emotional states in their early years, name those emotions to teach your child what they are and why it’s perfectly normal to feel that way.
Here is a free printable PDF activity that parents can work on with their young children to understand their emotions—in preparation for learning how to control them, with techniques like the ones described in this post.
